Flocculant vs clarifierwhats the diff

flocculant vs clarifier--what's the diff?

I see lot's of stuff to clear water of suspended crud. There's flocculant and there's clarifier and ultra-clarifier. What's the difference? I read the instructions that after using flocculant, all the crud should be vacuumed directly out to the drain, whereas clarifier can simply be circulated and filtered out through the pool filter. Both appear to be based on cationic polymers, so I'd assume the way each work is the same. What about the x-in-1 products that contain flocculant, clarifier, and a whole bunch of other cool-marketing terminology? How much of this stuff and how often do you folks typically have to use this? thanks! Dont know for sure what your after here. First the filter is the main thing is it doing a good job? Do you run the pool pump enough. Home depot has one clarifier I use .Its by Pool Time about $4.oo qt.Its cheap and you only use 2oz per 10,000gal pool about one time a week. I let Kreepy Krauly take care of the pool for me. Does a good job on the bottom and walls . About all I put in is chlorine and some muractic acid now and then.ED Hello there Ed! OK, here's my annoyance :-) Water looks crystal clear in the sun. At night, if I turn on the underwater lights, I see what appears to be a bizillion dust particles or tiny air bubbles all over the place, and the water looks a bit cloudy in that respect. I've shocked the pool already, and my Cl and pH are within range. Looks like flocculant and clarifier say if one uses too much, it'll make things worse. I found some 32oz concentrated clarifier at Target for $6. 1oz is good for 7500 gallons. That's cheaper than Walmart and HD. (I'm assuming clarifier is clarifier). I've dumped about 4oz into the pool already. There appears to be a layer of dust/crud on the pool floor that's easily kicked up, but I'm not sure if that isn't just the crud that blows in from the wind..... When the pump is on you have to brush the whole pool about 2 times a week If no one swims in it all the time. That Pool Time works the best for me. I let Kreepy Krauly take care of the pool for me. There are a lot of different kinds out and you have to find out just what one you need. There is Green and bluegreen algae then we have greenbrown a yellow and black algae. Sounds like you need some of that also. Cant you take a water sample to the pool company there and they run it free for you??? I use a Algicide50% by Pool time from Home depot. works good for all of them when I need it. You do know also that pool chlorine is 10% while like clorox is only 5 or 6% if you use that. I think look more to the algicide and not the clarifier. ED
