Trim Cedar Trees

Cedar trees are coniferous evergreens that usually grow 100 to 130 feet tall. They are ornamental trees with needles organized into clusters and scented wood. A cedar tree does not need much pruning, but still benefits from some attention and maintenance. Trimming a cedar tree must be done with caution, however, because evergreens to not respond well to heavy pruning and will not regenerate new growth if the old growth is cut back severely. Proper pruning will keep it healthy and prevent major damage to the tree.

Instructions

1. Prepare your tools for pruning in winter, sometime between November and January, when the tree is dormant. You may use pruning shears for smaller branches and a small saw for larger branches. Wipe the tools with rubbing alcohol, especially if you have used them on other plants, to prevent the spread of diseases between your plants.

2. Cut off any dead, diseased or broken branches smaller than an inch in width with the pruning shears. If the branch has new growth on it, only take off the dead portion up to the new growth. Otherwise, cut it back as close as you can to the bark of the tree.

3. Remove any dead, diseased or broken branches larger than an inch with the saw. Make three cuts. Make the first cut about a foot away from the base of the branch from underneath, cutting about a third of the way through the branch. Make the second cut from above, a few inches outside the first cut all the way through the branch. Make the third cut at the branch collar, where the branch intersects with the tree.

Tips Warnings

Do not shear cedars, as they naturally have a symmetrical shape.
