Hardi plankfiber cement siding

Hardi Plank--fiber cement siding

normally fiber cement goes right over plywood and tyvek;i have never heard of anyone putting INSULATION BOARD under hardiboard/fiber cement siding? Not really, although it can be done if the wall seems to be wavy with just the plywood/osb. It certainly doesn't add much insulation value to the house, and costs money. it does hide waves though? how would insulation hide waves, would'nt insulation board just follow the contour of the warped walls? The insulation will crush under the pressure of your nails in the new siding, and you can realize a straighter install if done carefully. chandler, what do you mean crush under the nails? how will that erase waves? It is not a panacea of fix-all, but as you apply your siding, the foam board will be flexible enough to allow for straight runs. Ideally you shouldn't have waves in your wall in the first place. I never use the foam board, but some installers find it helps. what would be the best size insulation for that specific purpose? 3/8, 1/2 inch? If you MUST install insulation on the exterior and MUST have a deflection for an aberrant wall, then 1/2 would be advisable. As I stated earlier, it is best to start with a good substrate to begin with, thereby eliminating the cost of the insulation board and it's installation. chandler, lets say the house is old and instead of normal 1/2 sheathing, they have 1 x 8's and some have to be replaced, are we better off replacing with plywood in the area's that the 1 x 8's are replaced in? will it matter if we have 1 x 8's in one area and plywood in another? can we use hardiplank over those old 1 x 8's? You'd be better off replacing the 1x8's with 1x8's since 1/2 plywood will be 1/4 too thin. You can use 3/4 plywood and attain good results. ok. so we could use 3/4 instead of 1/2 inch plywood. 3/4 will be pretty much even with the 1 x 8? is'nt a 1 x 8- 1 inch thick though? Originally Posted by taser ok. so we could use 3/4 instead of 1/2 inch plywood. 3/4 will be pretty much even with the 1 x 8? is'nt a 1 x 8- 1 inch thick though? depends on the age of the wood planks, most modern 1 bys are actually only 3/4 in. true dimension. Murphy was an optimist. when contractors refer to 1 by's, they mean they can use a 1 x 4,1 x6 ,or a 1 x 8? They are referring to the narrow dimension, or 1x, which is really only 3/4. A 5/4 board is a full 1 thick. a 5/4 ,thats a five quarter? thats is actually only an inch? is a 2 x 4 only 1 3/4 ? Nope, 2 lumber is only 1 1/2 thick and 3 1/2 wide. It doesn't make for easy math, but it is easy to construct with. You have to think in 3/4 increments all the time. 1/2' OSB is only nominally 7/16 thick, go figure. Sort of like going to the grocery store.....a lb of coffee is only 12 oz. A gallon of Ice Cream is only 75 ounces.
