The Best Maple Tree To Plant

Maples are beloved for their fall coloration.

Considering there are over 100 species of maples in the world, there's a maple for everyone. Maples make excellent shade trees and have beautiful foliage in the fall. They vary in size from 10 to 100 feet tall. Maples can grow in almost any growing condition, climate or location.

Sugar Maples

The sugar maple (Acer saccharum) is the kind most commonly used for syrup production. They have beautiful, fiery foliage in the fall and a rounded top. Growing from 60 to 100 feet, they are good choices for large spots that need a lot of shade. The sugar maple is less tolerant to salt or compacted soil than other varieties and is best suited to rural areas. Popular varieties include Green Mountain and Legacy.

Red Maples

Red maple (Acer rubrum) is a native tree in the United States. It regularly grows 40 to 60 feet, but wild trees reaching 100 to 120 feet tall are not unheard of. It prefers wet areas. The red maple does not always have red leaves in fall; the name refers to the color of flowers and fruit that appear before the leaves bud in the spring. Popular varieties include Columnare, October Glory and Autumn Flame.

Freeman Maples

The Freeman maple (Acer freemanii) is a hybrid of the red and silver maple. One of the most notable features of this tree is its lack of maple seedlings, though not all Freeman maples lack seeds. These trees grow up to about 60 feet tall and have a rounded shape. They grow very quickly, as much as 3 feet in a year. Seedless varieties include Autumn Blaze, Celzam Celebration, Marmo and Scarlet Sentinel.

Japanese Maples

Japanese maples (Acer palmatum) are common landscaping trees because of their delicate foliage and many varieties that only grow to be around 15 feet tall. Japanese maples come in both tree and shrub form. Many Japanese maples are grafted onto rootstock rather than growing on their own roots to increase their growth rate, since Japanese maples can grow very slowly. Popular varieties under 20 feet tall include Burgundy Lace, Butterfly, Chishio, Fireglow, Garnet, O kagami, Seiryu, Shaina and Sumi nagashi.
