High Efficiency DeHumidifier?

High Efficiency DeHumidifier? Is there such an animal? I did some calculations on the portable dehumidifier in my basement and it’s costing me an “arm and a leg” to operate. If it runs continuously (and some months it does) it consumes about 13 kwh in a 24 hour period…..carrying that out to a full month and applying the kwh/rate from my electric bill, it’s costing me about $38 a month. (((OUCH))) I need to get the operating cost down! I was thinking about putting it on a timer and running it 1-hr-on/1-hr-off. That would cut the cost in half but would it still control the humidity enough? Anyway, back to my original question; does anybody know if they make a high-efficiency dehumidifier? Thanks, Phil Yes, some newer model are E-star rated.. But, I am not sure how much you will save??? Is your basement pretty open to upstairs where humidity can make it down? You have windows open in the basement? Originally Posted by Philossifer I did some calculations on the portable dehumidifier in my basement and it’s costing me an “arm and a leg” to operate. (((OUCH))) I take it you have it running continuously? Is the unit sized properly for your space? I have a 70-pint energy-star rated unit I bought last year for my basement. It has controls where I set the humidity range I want and it cycles on and off accordingly. I've yet to calculate what my unit is costing me, though I plan to this year when I get it running again. If I had to guess on any given day last summer, it ran for a total of about 8 hours. If your duct work for the furnace and AC is down there in the basement why dont you let tha AC do its work down there also? ED ;)
