Types Of Plywood Siding

There are several kinds of plywood siding.

Since its introduction in the 1950s, plywood siding has been a popular building material used in many northern states. It comes in a variety of woods, patterns, sizes and prices.

Woods

Plywood siding is mostly made from southern pine or fir panels. Plywood is sometimes made from maple, birch or basswood and finished with some kind of veneer. This veneer, usually made of oak or maple, is a finished wood grain used on the surface.

Patterns

Plywood siding comes in several patterns. These patterns are grooved into the panels and can be anything from simple, straight lines to customized designs. The more intricate the designs, however, the more difficult and expensive they are to replace.

Sizes and Prices

There are many manufacturers and brands of plywood that come in a variety of sizes and prices. The normal size of a construction plywood panel is 4 feet wide by 8 feet long made up of an uneven number of layers that each range from a few hundredths of an inch to 1/4 of an inch in thickness. Plywood siding costs anywhere from $2.40 to more $4 per square foot (as of January 2011).
