Change your tail light bulbs as soon as they die.
When the bulb in your tail light goes out, replace it as soon as possible. Fortunately, changing the bulb is no harder than it is on any other Ford SUV--if you have the tools you need, you can do it in under an hour.
Instructions
1. Open the rear door or hatch of the vehicle. Use the Phillips screwdriver to find and remove the screws for the tail light covers that are on the left and right side of the vehicle. Each tail light will be secured by two screws.
2. Remove the tail light cover by pulling it off and then setting it aside. Pull the housing for the tail light to separate it from the frame.
3. Locate the bulb that has burnt out and turn it counterclockwise ¼ of a turn to release the bulb. Pull the bulb out of the socket or base.
4. Insert the new or replacement bulb in the socket and then place the housing back in the frame.
5. Set the cover back in place over the housing. Replace the screws and tighten them with the Phillips screwdriver to complete the project.
6. Start the vehicle and then apply the brake to test and see if the new bulb is working in the tail light.
Tips Warnings
Some models of Ford Explorer may use a hex bolt to secure the tail light cover, which will require using a hex head screwdriver. Be careful when removing the tail light covers--the plastic pegs that keep them attached to the frame are easy to break.
