Genie Garage Door Opener Has Problems

My Genie garage door opener is having trouble. When I hit the switch to open it, it lifts about 18 inches and then stops. Another hit of the switch and it will close.
It doesn't matter if I use the remote opener or the button on the wall, 18 inches and then it stops. Before I tear the thing apart and look for a mechanical issue, I thought I'd ask here and see if anyone has advice or had an experience similar to mine.
Thanks,
DSK

It may turn out to be the Genie or your instincts about a mechanical issue may be on target. Make sure you eliminate defective pulley and track wheel bearings first. Take a glance at the springs and cables also making sure nothing is caught up.
If all is OK mechanicially, try turning up the up force screw. It may be located under the light shield. Be careful not to force screw as they can be quite flimsy. Maybe an eigth of a turn willl do.

Great suggestion. And that jibes with something a buddy mentioned to me today, regarding the lift adjustment screw on his own door.
I've checked the tracks and cable, all looks clear and nothing binds. So I'll take a look for that screw next and see how it goes.

You can pull the emergency release knob to disconnect the opener mechanism from the door. Open and close the door by hand and see if it is binding. If not, either the stop switch has become misadjusted or the opening force may need adjustment. If you don't have the GDO tech manual, you can get a copy (PDF) on the Genie web site.

I did try disconnecting the door from the drive screw via the emergency release knob. And after inspecting it while lifting by hand, I couldn't find anything that was binding up. So next step was to take the cover off the drive and look for a lift force adjustment. Couldn't find anything at all that indicates a lift or force adjustment. There was a setting for my remote control channels, and a small push button next to an LED that flashed when I pushed it. But nothing else.
I looked for manuals on Genie's website but maybe not thoroughly enough. I'll go back out and see what I can find.

Don't want to sound condescending..
but, I had this issue earlier but it really turned out to be the stop switch adjustment. I had tweaked it couple of times but in the last try had forgotten to tighten the switch to the rails.
Result was unpredictable with the door behaving erratic when I pressed any of remotes or wall panel. Was a great Duh!! moment.

Similar problem: when closing the door, it reverses without stopping after it reaches the closed position. Genie site says it's probably a problem with the lift switch; also mentions force adjustment and contact reverse. Can't find my manual, so I'm at a loss. Can anyone help? Thanks!

You should be able to view the manual at the Genie site. What model is it?

Found the right manual. looks like I need to adjust CLOSE limit switch and do a force adjustment for both OPEN and CLOSE limit switches. never did that before (door opener has been installed and working for 15+ years, and I didn't install it). wish me luck!
