Remove V Star Risers

Yamaha's V Star line of cruiser motorcycles use a set of raised clamps called risers to attach their handlebars to the front fork. The risers are bolted directly onto the motorcycle's upper triple clamp, allowing a damaged riser to be removed for replacement. Repairs aside, replacing the stock risers with a taller set of aftermarket risers can improve comfort by reducing your reach to the handlebars. Removing the risers can be a bit of a process, as the handlebar and several of its associated components must be removed first. Set aside at least one hour to complete this project.

Instructions

1. Remove the locking cable ties from the handlebar. Lift the small tab on the cable tie's end to release the lock, then pull the cable ties off of the handlebar.

2. Remove the screws from the back of both handlebar switch assemblies using a Phillips screwdriver. Separate the top and bottom halves of the left switch assemblies, then pull it off the handlebar.

3. Separate the top and bottom halves of the right switch assembly, then pull it slightly away from the handlebar to access the throttle grip's flange. Pull both throttle cables out of the grip's flange. Slide the throttle grip off of the end of the handlebar and pull the right switch assembly away.

4. Unscrew the front brake master cylinder's mounting bolts with an 8-mm socket and a socket wrench. Pull the master cylinder away from the handlebar. At this point, only the clutch lever, clutch cable and the left hand grip will be attached to the handlebar.

5. Pry the rubber bolt covers off handlebar risers. Unscrew the risers' bolts with a 5-mm Allen wrench, then pull the top halves of the risers off of the handlebars. Pull the handlebar off of the risers and lay it alongside the motorcycle.

6. Unscrew the risers' nuts on the bottom of the upper triple clamp using a 12-mm ratcheting wrench or socket. Pull the risers out of the upper triple clamp.
