The Yamaha V-Star Classic 650 is a cruiser-style motorcycle offered from the late 1990s through 2010. The 2010 model is known simply as the Classic 650 and is offered by Yamaha's recently created brand, Star Motorcycles. While 2010's Star Classic shares specifications similar to its predecessor, the V-Star Classic 650 produced before the creation of the Star Motorcycles brand in 2005, carries some characteristics, such as its large windshield, that differentiate it from the most recent bike. Throughout the years, the Classic 650 has retained its retro look, low frame height and excessive use of chrome trim and wire-spoked wheels.
Engine and Transmission
A 649 cc two-cylinder, four-stroke engine powers the Classic 650. The engine has a respective bore and stroke of 81 mm and 63 mm and has a compression ratio of 9:1. The single overhead cam engine is air-cooled and has been the mainstay power plant of the 650. The 2010 Classic 650 achieves an estimated fuel efficiency of 49 mpg. Contributing to the Classic 650's retro look is the fully chromed engine case. Inside, each cylinder has its own cooling fins and travels through a ceramic-composite coated shaft that helps reduce operating temperatures.
Suspension, Braking and Chassis
At the front of the Classic 650's suspension is a telescopic front fork offering 5.5 inches of travel. The rear suspension is single, adjustable shock that provides an overall 3.9 inches of travel. Front brakes on the Classic 650 are comprised of a single 11.7-inch diameter disc. A 7.9-inch diameter drum brake provides its rear stopping power. Integrated into the chassis is a heel/toe shifter and full-size rider floorboards. The chassis frame itself is constructed of large-diameter steel tubing.
Physical Dimensions
As a cruiser-style motorcycle, the Classic 650 has a relatively long wheelbase of 64 inches, with an overall length of 96.5 inches. The bike's total height is 43.5 inches with the seat positioned at a height of 27.9 inches. Overall width of the Classic 650 is 36.6 inches. The teardrop shaped gas tank has a 4.2-gallon capacity and serves as the mounting point for the bike's speedometer. Additionally, the motorcycle's seat can be lifted up to reveal a helmet compartment.
