Read and Rise is a national initiative sponsored by Scholastic.
Read and Rise book fairs organize families, schools and communities to promote children's literacy. Often, Read and Rise book fairs are hosted at a school, and parents and students are invited to attend. Book fairs feature an array of free literacy-based activities, such as book readings and build-a-book crafts. Literacy-themed decorations create a fun and engaging atmosphere for the event.
Instructions
1. Choose a special school theme for the Read and Rise Fair to plan decorations accordingly. For instance, a Reading is Magical theme might incorporate decorations having to do with castles, fairies or other mystical creatures. Decorate for a Read, White and Blue themed fair with flags and other patriotic banners.
2. Decorate the main entrance of the book fair with an archway through which students and families will walk. This kind of entrance reinforces the exciting notion that books promise a kind of other world to which readers escape. Decorate the archway to reflect the theme chosen. For instance, create a castle entrance for a magical-themed book fair or a rocket ship or boat for a space or nautical-themed book fair, respectively.
3. Create a book corner or book nook. A book corner provides space for any book readings to take place or for students and their families to sit down together. Use a tent or other prop to make this space more intriguing and inviting.
4. Use balloons and streamers to attract attention to the book tables and to decorate any tables for crafts or other activities. Add props to reinforce the fair theme.
