Determine Curtain Rod Length

Hanging curtains on windows is a great way to add a final touch and complete the look of a home. If you have never hung curtains or installed curtain rods before it may seem like and over whelming task, especially if you have a number of different windows that need treatments. Whether you are hanging a valance, sheer curtains or traditional curtain panels, there is a systematic way to help you choose the proper length of your curtain rods.

Instructions

1. Use measuring tape to measure the length of the window you intend to install your curtain rod above. If there is crown molding that frames the window, measure from one end of the molding to the other end horizontally. If you choose for your curtain rod to extend beyond your window, measure for the extra space you will need as well. Jot down the measurements on a piece of paper so that you do not forget them.

2. Choose your curtains before you select a curtain rod to make sure they are a good fit. Depending on the length, color and weight of the curtains you pick out, you may need a heavy rod, a thin rod, or one that is a particular color. Once you know the curtains that you are going to hang, decide on the type of rod that will be most appropriate.

3. Visit a store to check out the curtain rods. Look at the dimensions on the type of curtain rod you want to use. The dimensions should be located on the rod packaging and will be a range of numbers. The numbers are in a range because curtain rods can be stretched or shrunk to a certain capacity to fit a number of different window sizes. Choose the rod size with the number range that covers your measurement. For instance, if your window is 32 inches long, choose a rod with dimensions that range from 28 to 34 inches. Dimension ranges will vary depending on the type of rod you choose.

4. Hang sheer curtains beneath regular curtains on a rod that is slightly shorter than your traditional curtain rod. This way you will be able to hide the rod and not have it extend out beyond your regular curtains. For instance, if your regular curtain rod extends beyond the frame of the window totaling 42 inches, choose a sheer rod that is 38 inches so that it still extends beyond the window but remains hidden and does not go beyond the length of your other rod.
